This Mole Catching Spade is exactly the same width as a tunnel trap. It is made in India, and the lower shaft and blade are of carbon steel and the upper shaft and handle are of sturdy plastic.
It is a border spade, and we have the blade end specially sharpened and ground to a point here in England. This makes it far easier to dig into lawns and turf than a conventional spade. With this spade – and having learnt how to use a tunnel trap – you should be able, once you have located and marked out a run using a probe, to dig out the turf, set the trap, cover it and be walking away in under a minute and a half!
Just set my traps
Tired of waiting for a contractor to come once a week to check his Duffus traps whilst new molehills appeared I thought that I would supplement his work. I had stayed and chatted with him three times whilst he laid traps and I saw how he probed, cut out a section of earth, cleared the passage to either side, set and placed the trap and so I thought that I could do it.
I ordered three Duffus traps and a probe. They arrived with video passcodes to instruct on their use and I was pleased to learn that the traps had been tuned before dispatch.
I was really rather wary about setting them, mindful of the fact that they looked like they could crush a finger if handled incorrectly but using the safety principles in the video I overcame my fear.
Today I probed, found runs, cut open tunnels and placed traps. The next 48 hours or so will show how successful I have been.
I was really impressed with the quality of the materials, the fact that they were optimised before dispatch and the video instruction and would highly recommend the company. They have done as much as they can, now let’s hope that I reap the success that they have set me up for.
